CHATGPT Reflection
In today’s presentation, we talked about how ChatGPT can improve people’s writing skills in academic writing and discuss some ethical problems caused by using ChatGPT. My overall view on AI-assisted writing is positive. To me, ChatGPT can be a helpful tool and a threat to academic writing based on how people utilize it. In my opinion, ChatGPT is a convenient technology that improve my writing.
The first thing I like about ChatGPT is its ability to brainstorm the article or add more details to my ideas. When I wrote an academic paper, the process was complicated and it was hard to think of the questions and experiment. But after using ChatGPT, it provided guideline and suggestion for me to come up with an outline. It also gave details and questions to stimulate my thoughts. Sometimes, ChatGPT dives into different perspective that gave me different ideas and results.
The second thing ChatGPT helps in academic writing is the ability to correct typo and enhance the word choices and the flow of my sentence. When I wrote a paper, I may not be aware of the wrong spelling or grammar. In addition, I may accidentally misuse or create a word that didn’t exist. To solve this question, I will upload my paragraph to ChatGPT. It can check if my spelling and grammar are wrong or giving me a better word choice. Besides, ChatGPT can improve the coherence of my paragraph by adding transitional words or changing the sequence of the sentence.
The third advantage is summarizing the texts. For example, I will upload a long paper to ChatGPT and ask it to summarize the outline for this paper. In addition, I also ask it to generate a mind map to help me understand the structure of the paper more easily. I think this function can save me a lot of time by listing the key theme in the paper. It can also help me to connect each point and brainstorm the ideas.
Although ChatGPT has many functions to make learning more easily and less time consuming, we should be cautious while using AI. I consider ChatGPT as a helpful tool in academic writing rather than threat. I think we should avoid relying on AI too much because it may weaken out ability to think and judge. There is one critical weakness when I use ChatGPT to assist my writing. Its responses are not totally correct. If we rely on it too much, we cannot tell whether the answer is correct or not.
Last but not least, we should see ChatGPT as an assisting tool. We should avoid copy and paste the whole paragraph. Instead, we should learn how to paraphrase it in our own word so that our writing skill can improve and avoid any ethical problems.
